SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Southern Conference men’s soccer coaches have selected College of Charleston as the preseason favorite to win the league crown in 2010. The coaches also named an 11-player preseason all-conference team.

The Cougars, who finished in second place in the conference standings in 2009, are looking to become the sixth different team to claim a SoCon regular season championship in six seasons. CofC picked up five of eight first-place votes and 47 points overall.

“I appreciate the respect we’ve gotten from my fellow coaches in the league,” said head coach Ralph Lundy. “We all know, however, that it comes down to how we play in the games that really matter.”

The Cougars returned seven starters and eight additional letterwinners from last season’s runner-up team and brought on seven newcomers who look to have an impact immediately.

The Cougars placed two athletes on the eleven-man all-conference team in forward Kareem Yearwood (Sou Sou Islands, Tobago) and defender Sean Flatley (Virginia Beach, Va.) as well.

Yearwood was limited to five matches last season after suffering a season-ending injury in September. Despite the shortened season, Yearwood still managed to post five points on the season with two goals and an assist.

Flatley started in 20 matches last season and was named to the SoCon All-Conference First Team. He scored his first goal as a Cougar in a 4-3 victory over Coastal Carolina in the season opener. He netted three goals on the season from the Cougar backline.

“I’m pleased that these young men have produced at such a level that the other coaches in the league view them among the best,” said Lundy. “These players have earned these honors through their performance and I look forward to the impact they’ll continue to have on our program this season.”
