Darren Toby returned to Charleston, South Carolina on Tuesday night to face the local USL1 outfit for the 2nd Round of the US Open Cup at Blackbaud Stadium in front of 1,470 people. The game was somewhat melodramatic for Toby who previously called Charleston his home for the past 3 years while he atteneded and played at the College of Charleston.
The Battery opened the scoring in the 12th minute following a desperate scramble for the ball in the box. The ball came out to Battery striker Aaron King, who quickly responded with a shot at goal. Charlotte’s goalkeeper Eric Boss parried the shot but the clearance landed at the feet of Darren Spicer (Batter) who volleyed home from the right side of the penalty-area.
Charlotte enjoyed the majority of possession after half-time and were rewarded for their efforts with an equalizer in the 66th minute. Charlotte Midfielder Ben Johnson hurled a long-throw into the goal box, and Jorge Herrera delievered with a header past Keith Wiggans (Battery goalkeeper).
In the end though, the Charleston Battery defeated the Charlotte Eagles by a score of two goals to one. Osvaldo Alonso scored the winning goal from the penalty-spot in the 90th minute, and secured the victory for the home team.
The win lifts the Battery into the third round of the U.S. Open Cup; Charleston will face the current MLS champions, the Houston Dynamo in the next round at Blackbaud Stadium on Tuesday, July 1.
