Delaford’s skipper Kerwin John striked a mighty blow for his team in their victory againt St. Clair’s Coaching School in the final of the Goderick Alfred Memorial Twenty/20 tournament at Shaw Park, on Saturday.

Delaford, considered the underdogs, upstaged their more illustrious opponents (Coaching School) to capture the title before a large crowd at Shaw Park.

The Windward-based team just barely scraped into the Big Four owing to a superior run difference, but they rallied in the semi-final to defeat Cavaliers behind a well played knock of 48 runs from Ronnie McKenna. This victory promoted them to the final against the emerging powerhouse in Tobago cricket, St Clair’s Coaching School.

Coaching School took first strike at the crease and struggled to score freely against accurate bowling and tight fielding. Shawn Dates, a left-armed orthodox spinner, mesmerised the batsmen while Nolan Orr and Kirk John maintained a good line and length to limit Coaching School to 100 runs for nine wickets.

The Coaching School lads struggled and managed only 30 runs from the first eight overs with just one boundary. Although they had not lost a wicket early, they were unable to increase their run rate significantly in a late charge to post a really challenging total. National player Alden Daniel was their top scorer with 21 runs (out of a total of 100 runs) for the loss of nine wickets at the completion of their innings.

Delaford’s McKenna steadied the innings with 28 runs and was ably assisted by Curtis Archer who hit four sparkling fours in a knock of 24 runs, spurring Delaford to victory.

Greville Nicholson, coordinator for the tournament expressed satisfaction with the success of the event and lavished praises on all who contributed to its success, especially the Tobago House of Assembly Sports Division. Prior to the first ball being bowled, Patron of the tournament Chief Secretary Orville London met the players and shared brief remarks.
