Dwight YorkeThe Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation (T&TFF) yesterday announced T&T World Cup captain Dwight Yorke as their Player of the Year for 2006 and nominee for the First Citizens Sports Foundation Sportsman of the Year award.

According to T&TFF media officer Shaun Fuentes, it was felt that Yorke, leading the Soca Warriors to a commendable display at the 2006 World Cup, was the fitting choice with his inspiring contribution, despite the stirring performances of some of his other teammates last year.

Yorke, who was also the 2005 Player of the Year, is coming off one of his most successful years in recent times on the international stage. He led from the front, beginning the year with a pair of goals in a 2-0 victory over Iceland in a warm-up international in London in February, and other games leading up to their creditable 0-0 draw with Sweden in their opening World Cup fixture on June 10. Yorke was presented with the Man of the Match award for his performance that day in Dortmund .

Yorke was later voted the best defensive player of the group stage of the 2006 World Cup.

Dwight now campaign’s with Sunderland AFC (England), after a successful run with Sydney FC (Australia). For more on this story, visit the Trinidad Express.
